No to ‘love thy neighbour’
The report, “Residents oppose allotment of flat below CM scheme to a Muslim girl in Gujarat” (Inside pages, June 15), was surprising. There seems to be a weakening of secularity in present-day Indian society. Such a state of affairs threatens the amicable co-existence of many.

It was painful to learn that a number of residents have been towards the allotment of the flat to the lady. Is Indian society getting balkanised on the idea of caste and faith? The place are we headed? One hopes that the Vadodara Municipal Company and saner representatives will prevail upon the residents and persuade them that we’re all Indians and must co-exist peacefully.

State of welfare schemes
A distinguished chief of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, whereas campaigning in Attur, Salem, just lately, stated that “Telangana and Karnataka have adopted the Chief Minister’s free breakfast scheme for college students”. The chief added, “Moreover different States, Canada President Justin Trudeau had hailed it as the most effective scheme and declared its implementation of their nation.” One wonders whether or not the chief knew that the meal scheme was launched by the leaders, Ok. Kamaraj and M.G. Ramachandran, who expanded it. The report, “Everybody loves a sizzling, low-cost meal” (Tamil Nadu, June 16), on the state of the Amma Canteens below the DMK regime, was an eye-opener. It’s clear that the poor have been affected. If that is the state of the Amma canteens — a scheme by the DMK’s political rival — one wonders what state the DMK’s schemes are in.

Journey notes
The identical and embarrassing scenario arose after I travelled with my son on a direct flight from Mumbai to San Francisco to satisfy my granddaughter. It was a brief journey.
Being a senior citizen, my seat had been booked in premium economic system class, whereas my son was in economic system. Two younger woman college students, who have been pursuing an academic course in the USA, have been seated subsequent to me. One of many ladies requested me whether or not I may sit within the center part in order that they might sit collectively. Given my age — I’m 87 years previous — and being a really lengthy flight, I politely stated, “Very sorry, a window seat will probably be very comfy for me.” After reaching San Francisco, I used to be shocked to know that the 2 ladies have been shut associates of my granddaughter! An “sudden connection amid the clouds” (‘Open web page – Journal’, June 16).
