North Korea Announces Launch of Nuclear Attack Submarine to Counter U.S. Naval Strength

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has announced the launch of a nuclear attack submarine that it has been developing for years. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described this step as crucial in building a nuclear-armed navy to counter the United States and its Asian allies.

The submarine, named “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” is designed to launch tactical nuclear weapons from underwater. However, the specific number of missiles it can carry and fire has not been disclosed.

During the launching ceremony and onboard inspection, Kim expressed satisfaction that the country now has its own nuclear attack submarine to counter the advanced naval assets of the U.S. In July, the U.S. docked a nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine in South Korea for the first time since the 1980s.

Kim also revealed that North Korea is working on a nuclear-propelled submarine and plans to modify its existing submarines and surface vessels to handle nuclear weapons. Building a nuclear-capable army is seen as an “urgent task” for North Korea.

Prior to this, North Korea had been conducting tests on various missiles designed to be fired from submarines. This capability would enhance its deterrent by ensuring the ability to retaliate from underwater even after absorbing a nuclear attack on land.

Ballistic missile submarines would also pose a maritime threat to South Korea and Japan, both key U.S. allies in the region. These countries already face missile defenses overwhelmed by solid-fuel weapons launched from land vehicles. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops are stationed in the region.

However, analysts say that it would take considerable time, resources, and technological advancements for North Korea to build a fleet of several submarines capable of quiet travel at sea and reliable execution of attacks.

The announcement comes amid speculation that Kim may soon visit Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. This meeting could potentially focus on North Korean arms sales to refill Russian reserves depleted by the war in Ukraine.

Analysts suggest that in exchange for artillery shells and other ammunition, North Korea may seek economic aid and advanced weapons technologies from Russia. These technologies may include submarine-launched ballistic missile systems, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and military spy satellites.
